The CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) method enables the development of thermodynamic and property databases, that in conjunction with extrapolation methods of the descriptions of binary and ternary systems to higher-order systems, allow the calculation of data for higher-order systems.
CALPHAD stands for CALculation of PHAse Diagrams, a methodology introduced in 1970 by Larry Kaufman. [1] [2] [3] An equilibrium phase diagram is usually a diagram with axes for temperature and composition of a chemical system.

Looking for an inspection copy? This title is not currently available on inspection × × One of the processes in the CALPHAD method is to assess binary phase diagrams. An important concept is the lattice stabilities of elements that Kaufman proposed [].While it is hard to get lattice stabilities for unstable structures from experiments, but we can still estimate the phase equilibria out of the known composition, temperature and pressure range. Il faut bien comprendre que la méthode CALPHAD peut s’utiliser de deux manières différentes suivant les utilisateurs.

This method enables calculation of stable and metastable phase equilibria, as well as thermodynamic properties such as activity, enthalpy, driving force, and so on. Some examples of the calculated phase diagrams, obtained by applying the CALPHAD method are reviewed, in connection with the design of their microstructures. # 1998 Elsevier Science

In complex systems, computational methods such as CALPHAD are employed to model thermodynamic properties for each phase and simulate multicomponent phase behavior. Written by recognized experts in the field, this is an introductory guide to the CALPHAD method, providing a …
•Thus thermodynamics applies considerably outside equilibrium. The construction of phase diagram calculations based on experiments and thermodynamic analysis are generally referred to as the calculation of phase diagrams (CALPHAD) approach [ 20.1 ]. This method provides a very accurate understanding of the properties originating in the macroscopic character of the material under study. It is widely reported that CALPHAD is an extrapolation method when the thermodynamic properties of a multicomponent system are approximated by its subsystems. In this work the meaning of the words extrapolation and interpolation is discussed in context of the CALPHAD method. The CALPHAD (Calculation of phase diagrams) method and the Compound Energy Formalism (CEF) are briefly introduced and a few selected examples of their application are reported. The Calphad method is currently the only theoretical approach for the modelling of thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams of multicomponent systems which can be used for complex systems, both in basic research and in the industrial applications.
